A concept jazz cafe and record shop. The Crescent Moon began with the simple goal of wanting to create a place for community, somewhere people could come and enjoy some relaxing time with friends, go on a solo date, or meet new people and form new connections. When we considered how this could be done, music came to mind. Music is a form of art that is particularly amazing at bringing all different kinds of people together, and jazz specifically is fantastic at this. With the birth of jazz in the city of New Orleans came the joyous sounds of brass bands all across the city, bringing the community together and attracting tourists into their orbit - jazz is a special genre of music you just absolutely cannot ignore! It has a constantly changing sound, from New Orleans to Bebop, all the way to fusion jazz such as jazz-rap, jazz-pop, and cool-jazz. The diversity of the genre means there is a sound for everyone - something we want to celebrate and support.

APPROACH
When deciding on a visual direction, I took direct inspiration from the ornate iron balconies of New Orleans and combined it with geometric visuals inspired by jazz music itself. The Crescent Moon is my interpretation of jazz as a visual identity. I wanted to capture the beauty and movement of the instruments as well as the unpredictable and improvisational elements to create contrasts throughout. The colour palette was inspired by the season of spring, a season that shows strong changes and growth, something seen very much within the jazz genre.

After the opening of The Crescent Moon and the beginning of the hosting of live music events at the venue, we decided we wanted to try and do more for the jazz community - so Crescent Moon Records was born! We began this venture due to seeing how difficult it could be for artists to try and get their music out there and we decided we needed to take some action.
Crescent Moon Records exists primarily to help artists get their music recorded and printed so that we can then sell their music in our store and spread the word. Not only does this allow for jazz musicians to get their music out there, but it provides them with connections and community to keep in contact with, and we will always offer them a place to perform and host events.
Our core mission at The Crescent Moon is to cultivate community and help local and global jazz musicians and Crescent Moon Records is just another way we can help to fulfil our goals.
